REPORTING

by Tasha A.F. Lemley

Below is a selection of some of my favorite stories I’ve gotten to report.

Most of my pieces for WPLN (full list) - Nashville Public Radio focus on communities close to my heart.

WHEN AN INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY MEANS LIFE OR DEATH for UNDARK/SciAm covers nearly a year of reporting on a decades-long case. I unravel the story of Pervis Payne, a man with an intellectual disability sentenced to death, and the court battles to remove him from The Row. Reporting included multiple visits to court, pulling archival tape, sound design, and interviews with attorneys, nonprofit leaders, and scientists as well as family members.

FINDING STEPHANIE for Neighbors Podcast is about an online group viciously bullying a panhandling woman. This is probably my most personal piece and will give you a good sense of my personality and style of chewing on questions that have no clear answers. I laughed and cried all through this process.

For my field work, I’m primarily using a Zoom H6 recorder with a Sennheiser MKE 600 mic. I also have a Zoom H5 recorder, Sennheiser MD 46, Shure Beta 58A (2), AKG C 900, and Rode NTG2 mics.
